Here is Wheaton Aston taken from the one inch to a mile 3rd Edition (Large Sheet Series) sheet 62 from 1914. The Shropshire Union canal runs diagonally across the top of the right hand side. The Lock marked is the only one between Autherley stop lock in Wolverhampton 8 miles to the south and the Tyrley locks at Market Drayton 17 miles to the north.

In 1914 the main form of transport for the military was still
the horse so it was essential to know where the nearest Smithy
was in case you needed a new horseshoe put on by the village blacksmith.
Wheaton Aston's Smithy is marked just to the left of the Inn,
the aptly named Coach and Horses no doubt where the thirsty
smith would end up after a hot day by the forge.
The T. above Wheaton Aston means that the village has a Post and Telegraph Office.
