Wheaton Aston 1834

Ordnance Survey Geological map of 1890 on 1834 base map

Here is Wheaton Aston taken from one inch hand coloured geological map from about 1890. The base map is the one inch Old Series sheet 62 NW and dates from 1834. The Shropshire Union canal runs diagonally across the top right hand side of the extract but Wheaton Aston lock is not marked. This is because the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction canal as it was originally called was not opened until 1835 the year after the map was printed. The yellow/brown colour on the map comes from hand watercolour and indicates that Wheaton Aston is on the f6 (top right) which is Red Marl within the Keuper beds of the Upper New Red Sandstone.
